Lisa Doob and Emily Teck: Engaging Young Families Through Musical Play

Want to have fun with music, and engage in joyful Jewish learning? In this session, participants will delve into teaching children and the young at heart through musical play. The hands-on strategies we will explore will touch on stages of child development, inclusion and learning styles, movement, props, improvisation. Songs will include kid favorites of all types, and will include the themes of Torah, prayer, holidays, and values. No previous experience required – come join us for some musical play!

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Canada, Cantor Lisa Doob was ordained by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in 2001. Prior to her arrival in Lexington, Massachusetts, she served congregations in the Baltimore, Brooklyn, and Chicago areas. As a Cantor, Lisa is passionate about creating relationships with others through music – whether in services, B’nai Mitzvah lessons, choir, or religious school. She has performed in concerts in Jerusalem, Baltimore, Brooklyn, Manhattan, San Diego, Tulsa, New Orleans, Boston, Syracuse and Chicago. Some of Lisa’s music has been published in The Complete Jewish Songbook for Children, Volume II; Tzedek Tirdof: The Social Action Songbook (Transcontinental Music); and R’fuah Sh’leimah: Songs of Jewish Healing (Synagogue 3000). She is a contributing author to the 2014 volume, Music, Carrier of Intention in 49 Jewish Prayers. Lisa is a member of the Boston cohort of Kesher Shir, a Jewish songwriting collaborative project (www.keshershir.org). She is currently recording her first album, Rest and Joy, which is a compilation of her meditative music. Lisa is proud to be the Cantor of Temple Isaiah in Lexington since 2008, and lives nearby with her husband and three children.

 

Emily Teck HeadshotEmily Aronoff Teck is a Jewish Educator specializing in engagement of young children and families to explore, discover, and celebrate Judaism in relevant, meaningful and musical ways. Emily offers a unique combination of experience, knowledge, and creativity; her skill set includes engaging young children in music and movement, creating curricular resources, facilitating professional development, and integrating technology to optimally, educate, and empower community members. Emily is the founding director of www.JewishLearningMatters.com, a searchable database of curated, categorized educational resources, an initiative of the Rosenfeld Foundation at the University of Miami. Emily spent a decade as a Jewish early childhood music specialist before founding Jewish Family Jams, a Music & Movement program for young children and their grown-ups in 2015. Emily studied at Brandeis University and in Israel before graduating from Florida Atlantic University with a B.A. in Jewish Studies. In 2012, Emily received a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Music from Florida Atlantic University. She is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in Jewish Education from Gratz College.  She recorded 5 albums of music and was featured on two PJ Library song compilations (listen at www.MissEmilyCelebrates.com). Emily lives a grateful life in South Florida with her husband, Jason, their daughter, Talya.
